SUMMARY:"Silenced Voices" Film Screening at GMFA
DESCRIPTION:The Fairfield Foundation Family Circle\, a volunteer-led affiliate of Coming to the Table\, is sponsoring “Silenced Voices\,” a documentary honoring the legacy of African American communities. The film will be shown at 11 am on Monday\, January 20\, at the Gloucester Fine Arts Museum\, 6894 Main Street. Come early to view the photography exhibit “Everyday People: Through Freedom’s Lens” an exhibition of photographs by Freedom B. Goode. \n\n\n\n“Silenced Voices” is a 30-minute film exploring storytelling during a transformative week at Pharslia Plantation in Nelson County\, Virginia\, where descendants of enslaved and enslaver families unite to share accounts of their history. The film captures episodes of intimate conversation and reflection that offers a moving example of what it means to tell and hear truths about slavery. “Silenced Voices” presents a model for healing\, understanding\, and honoring the complex legacy of slavery in a space that encourages honesty\, empathy\, and growth. \n\n\n\nThe film will be followed by a question and answer period with the filmmaker\, Pharsalia descendants\, and a family historian. The event is free\, but donations will be accepted. Contributions help the Fairfield Family Circle reclaim and celebrate the legacy of African American communities like those that grew out of plantations like Fairfield\, Rosewell\, and Timberneck\, and the Belroi community surrounding the Walter Reed Birthplace\, and create a platform for descendants to connect\, reflect\, and heal. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.savingslavehouses.org/collective-storytelling-2/silenced-voices-in-interpreting-sites-of-slavery/ “
